A Reading Update and New Books

I finished my second book of September. I'll provide my review and the synopsis of the next book in line. Yesterday, Jo and I took a drive down to Qualicum Beach for the afternoon. I had a hankering to take a look at The Bookcase, a quirky little used book store on the main street. Jo wandered around a bit, checking out other shops. OK, here's the story. I finished after about 20 - 30 minutes, then went out to wait for Jo. Of course, being a worrywart, when she didn't show up after 20 minutes or so, I began to panic, even got into the car and drove around downtown Qualicum trying to find her. 😓 Of course she just wandered down the street after a nice little bit of shopping in a couple of new shops. *sigh* Yes, I need to relax a bit more.

Anyway, the point being that I bought a few books there and also locally. So I'll provide the synopses of those new books. Since that will end up making a bit of a list, I'll stop there and continue with my ongoing look at Women authors in a future post.

Oh right. Today I voted in the advance polls for the Canadian federal election, the first day of the advance polls. It was very busy actually. Good to see. Considering what's been going on down South of the border in the US, I'm very worried about this election. I fear that the right wing fanatics, anti-vaxxers / anti-maskers, anti-abortion, pro-gun rights, etc will make inroads into the political landscape. The Liberals might not be perfect but I do believe they have the best interests of Canada at heart and that they've done a pretty good job during this pandemic that's turned our lives upside down. Anyway, enough political talk. Think before you vote and then vote!

Just Finished

1. The First Prophet by Kay Hooper (Bishop Files #1).

"The First Prophet is my second book by paranormal thriller writer, Kay Hooper and the 1st book in her Bishop Files series. There is a bit of Dean Koontz in the style, but the stories are unique in their own right.

Psychics are disappearing in the US and there seem to be two competing organizations battling each other, one of shadows, who are killing &/or kidnapping them the other, which may be connected to the US government (it's unclear, at least to me), which is monitoring and trying to save psychics. Their record isn't great as the 'shadow' organization seems to have much better resources; both financially and in personnel.

The story revolves around Sarah Gallagher. Sarah is a newfound psychic, gaining her powers after being struck in the head. She is an antique dealer in Virginia and is being monitored by both organizations. At the beginning, her house is burned down and a local author, Tucker Mackenzie, gets involved in trying to protect Sarah. He does have ulterior motives which become apparent later on.

Tucker and Sarah go on a road trip to get away from her followers, also to maybe find Sarah's destiny. Along the way there will be further attacks and incidents, as well, we will see further attacks on other psychics. The shadow organization seems to be one step ahead at all times; do they use their own psychics? The 'good guys' are always one step behind. (And who the heck is Bishop???) As the story progresses, Sarah becomes more confident with her powers; it seems she's got something special.

It's a very interesting story, an neat concept and characters I like, especially the main two. The ending is satisfying, although it does leave you with questions that reading future books will be needed to resolve the whole overarching story-line. Basic questions even like, who are the bad guys and who are the good guys? And who is Bishop!!! An enjoyable, action - packed, thriller. (3.5 stars)"

Currently Reading

1. Fires of London by Janice Law (Francis Bacon #1).

"Francis Bacon walks the streets of World War II London, employed as a warden for the ARP to keep watch for activities that might tip off the Axis powers. Before the war, Bacon had traveled to Berlin and Paris picking up snatches of culture from a succession of middle-aged men charmed by his young face. Known for his flamboyant personal life and expensive taste, Bacon has returned home to live with his former nanny—who’s also his biggest collector—in a cramped bohemian apartment. But one night, death intrudes on his after-hours paradise. When a young man is found dead in the park, his head smashed in, Bacon and the rest of London’s demimonde realize that they have much more to fear than the faraway scream of war."

3. Rhode Island Red by Charlotte Carter (Nanette Hayes #1).

"Nanette is doing OK playing her saxophone out on the street. Sure her boyfriend Walter doesn't think it?s any way for a black woman with a Masters degree in French to carry on, but she's happy. Then things start happening. An undercover cop dies in her apartment. A strange man wants her to explain the mystery of Charlie Parker. Walter wants to get married. And who or what is Rhode Island Red? Fast, sweet and funny, Rhode Island Red is a classic New York thriller, the story of a Spike Lee heroine in a Woody Allen world.

4. The Woggle-Bug Book by L. Frank Baum (1905).

"The Woggle-Bug Book has long been the most rare of all of the Oz books written by L. Frank Baum. At the time of publication the Woggle-Bug was an American Icon and wildly popular. There were Woggle-Bug postcards and buttons, a Woggle-Bug song, and a Woggle-Bug board game from Parker Brothers, and a musical play.ONE day Mr. H. M. Woggle-Bug, T. E., becoming separated from his comrades who had accompanied him from the Land of Oz, and finding that time hung heavy on his hands (he had four of them), decided to walk down the Main street of the City and try to discover something or other of interest. The initials "H. M." before his name meant "Highly Magnified," for this Woggle-Bug was several thousand times bigger than any other woggle-bug you ever saw. And the initials "T. E." after his named meant "Thoroughly Educated"-and so he was, in the Land of Oz. But his education, being applied to a woggle-bug intellect, was not at all remarkable in this country, where everything is quite different than Oz. Yet the Woggle-Bug did not suspect this, and being, like so many other thoroughly educated persons, proud of his mental attainments, he marched along the street with an air of importance that made one wonder what great thoughts were occupying his massive brain. This edition includes 23 illustration by Ike Morgan."

5. The Nemesis from Terra by Leigh Brackett (1961).

"Rick Urquhart was going to conquer the turmoil-ridden planet of Mars. He was penniless and unknown, but there could be no doubt that he would rule the Red Planet--the ancient Martian mystic had made the prophecy, there was no way fate could cheat him of his prize.

But there were powerful interests on both Earth and Mars who didn't believe in prophecies--and they were going to undo Rick's future before it had a chance to begin . . ."

I have read a couple of books by Sci-Fi author John Christopher. I saw this young adult trilogy at The Bookcase and thought it might be interesting.

6. The White Mountains by Christopher (Tripods #1).

"Young Will Parker and his companions make a perilous journey toward an outpost of freedom where they hope to escape from the ruling Tripods, who capture mature human beings and make them docile, obedient servants."

Will intends to be one of them. But although many enter the City, no one ever comes out. How will he escape with what he must risk his life to learn?"

8. The Pool of Fire (Tripods #3).

"Will narrates further fight against alien Tripods. With taciturn Fritz, peddlers recruit more rebels. In four years, a spaceship will bring machines that poison Earth air for the Masters. Now the man accustomed to killing people in cold blood must adjust to a sadistic ritual of early marriage… he must spend time with his eccentric mother-in-law. This event takes an unexpected turn when Macklin discovers mom-in-law's boyfriend Benjamin Grinnell is a spotter for a gang of armed robbers. Now Grinnell's life is threatened, and Grinnell's jeopardy endangers his sweetie… and Laurie.

Macklin, driven by his professional curiosity and his desire to protect his family, can't help but get involved. Who lured her away? How? And, the most puzzling question for Lieutenant Luis Mendoza of Los Angeles' Homicide Squad, is why?"

12. Of Men and Monsters by William Tenn (1968).

"For the aliens, men and women are just a nuisance, neither civilized nor intelligent, and not a worthy adversary. In fact, they are regarded as vermin, to be exterminated. Which may just be humankind's strength and point the way forward."

13. World of Trouble by Ben H. Winters (Last Policeman #3). Now to get the 2nd book in the trilogy. 😀
